Camping/Tubing on the Kern River (Ming Lake Campgrounds)

It's become a tradition... the first weekend after the 4th of July, more and more of us head up to the Kern River to camp alongside the beautiful river (just 3 hours drive North of San Diego) for a couple days. Usually about 40 of us. And, we've had a great time doing it. So, lets not stop now! What to Expect: Lots and lots of fun with old and new friends Camping near the river, on grass, with picnic tables, fire rings, restrooms, and hot showers. Most have plenty of shade from the heat. We will be camping at the Ming Lake campgrounds. 1-2 tubing trips per day. We shuttle the tubes by cars 15 minutes North of our campsites to the put in. Then well float leisurely down the river for 1.5 to 2 hrs The float down the river is mostly relaxing with 2 mildly exciting rapids and 2 rope swings Fun and Games. Last year, a friend brought karaoke and the volleyball net. We sometimes also play cards, board games, and/or just sit around the camp fire. A convenience store/gas station just a few minutes drive away and all the conveniences of Bakersfield just 10-20 minutes away. All pets must stay on a leash for the sake of other campers and wildlife. What to Bring: Camping gear (tent, sleeping bag, coolers, chairs, etc etc) Food & drink River Tube. Many to choose from in various price ranges. Below are a couple options. o Sevylor 48" River Pirate Tube ($11.99) Personal Floatation Device (life vest, especially if you're a poor swimmer) Camera (waterproof if possible) Sunscreen Fire Wood, if you have it Games, if you have any. (ideas: volleyball net, badminton, croquette, bocce ball, horse shoes, cards, board games, etc) A good attitude :) When to Arrive: Come as early as Thursday morning. A few people usually leave very early (4:30am), arriving early enough to ensure we get enough campsites for everyone. But, you can arrive as late as 9:00 am Saturday morning and it would still be well worth your effort. Help Needed: I'm going to need some help to make this work. Reserving the campsites is always the biggest concern. They are first-come-first-serve and usually sell out by Thursday mornings for the weekend. In order to reserve a campsite, we must be able to park a car there and pay the fees. They allow 8 people per campsite, so to make this work, I will need at least 1 person (and their car) per 8 to volunteer to get their early Thursday morning with one of my friends that will also be going. Therefore, I will likely need 4 volunteers. Let me know if you may be able to leave earlier. Ming Lake's website: Price: Around $23 per person, minus gas and food. Whats Included with the Price: Your camping fees (4 days, 3 nights) Your Parking, up to 2 cars per site. Extra cars pay $5 per night for overflow, so arrive early and avoid this charge. Directions: Starting from Oceanside, CA 1. I-5 N toward Los Angeles - 166 mi 2. CA-99 N toward Bakersfield/Fresno - 26.3 mi 3. Exit 26A to merge onto CA-178 E/Rosedale Hwy toward Downtown - 11.1 mi (signs for Union Ave/Lake Isabella) 4. Left at Alfred Harrel Hwy - 2 mi 5. Right at Lake Ming Rd - 1 mi 6. Turn right at River Rd - 0.3 mi
